I can never spell this stuff right. Piccalilli is a mustard pickle. It is very different from the stuff known as piccalilli in the US, but I'm not sure how, since I never ate it there. The stuff here is vegetables (primarily cauliflower) brined and vinegared and covered in mustardy sauce. It is used on sandwiches and cold cuts and stuff. For testing purposes, I'm eating it on a cracker, though I have before tried it on a sandwich and it was pretty good.
It is bright yellow, lighter in color than pure mustard. It doesn't smell of much. It looks like very yellow mustard with chunks of stuff in. Which is very much what it is, I guess.
It tastes vinegary before it tastes mustardy. The mustard color is there, but the flavor is very mild and not too strong. The cauliflower keeps its texture in the mix, so it is chewier than I expected, but not bad. It's even slightly sweet. It reminds me of mustard and pickle relish mixed together, so I think it might be very nice on a hot dog. (As long as said hot dog does not come from a can.) If you like mustard and vinegar and cauliflower, this is a nice condiment for a beef sandwich or a sausage. I probably wouldn't eat it straight on a cracker again, but it's pretty good in its intended place.
Try some on a roast beef sandwich or something. You can get it from English Tea Store.
