Toad In the Hole
Category: main dish, self-cooked
Price: varies based on ingredients
Ingredients: sausages, flour, milk, eggs, salt, oil
Toad In the Hole is a basic working-class kind of dish. It is sausages baked into what is essentially a yorkshire pudding. It isn't fancy and it isn't expensive. I think that the one that I made (enough to serve 2 or 3 people) cost me around £1. I have no idea why it is called Toad In the Hole, but I'll let you know if I figure it out.
It was easy to prepare. I just cooked the sausages, mixed the batter and baked them together. It smelled very savory and nice. Like a nice pan of popovers and some sausages. It was nicely browned and looked pretty good.
The batter part,or pudding, was crispy on the outside and soft underneath. It tasted very much like a popover or yorkshire pudding. The sausages were good, but a bit greasy. That could be varied by using low-fat or turkey sausages. The combination of batter and sausage was very nice. It was a simple and tasty way of making a dinner of sausages seem a little more interesting. I think that I would very likely cook and eat this again.
