silverchair Released 2002, Atlantic Records
If you've ever heard of silverchair, you probably think, "They're that cheesy grunge band that's a cross between Nirvana and Hansen, right?" If you think that, you haven't heard silverchair lately. Admittedly their first two albums, "Frogstomp" and "Freakshow" were on the immature side. But they were kids. What do you expect? (I actually like their first two albums quite a bit...) In their third, "Neon Ballroom" they started to show real maturity in their musical style, mixing orchestral sounds and more personal lyrics. If "Neon Ballroom" was good, "Diorama" is absolute genius. This is the kind of music that fills you completely and soaks through your skin. It's orchestral and cinematic. I wish I could express the feeling of this music in words, but it is really beyond words. It's an experience. If you don't believe me, go to a music store that has one of those things where you can listen to a cd before you buy it. Listen to "Tuna In the Brine" or "Across the Night". This is music that is as good as any drug. It's music you can fall into and get lost in. When I become benevolent dictator of the world, everyone who owns a Britney Spears album will have to trade it for this cd, like a "guns for toys" kind of thing. This is not pop music. It is truly good music. It's simply beautiful. |
