Released 2000 Directed by Lars von Trier Starring: Bjork Catherine Deneuve David Morse Peter Stormare Joel Grey When I mentioned that I like this movie to one of my friends, she said, "I heard that it's like the saddest movie ever made." She's not wrong. "Dancer In the Dark" is about a woman who is going blind, knows her son will also go blind, gets fired from her factory job and is betrayed by her only friends. And all that isn't even the really sad part. I cried about 5 times before it got to the really sad part at the end. Aside from being really sad, this movie is also really really beautiful. The camera work is done in a sort of documentary style for a lot of it, which can take some getting used to. The main character is in these really difficult and really sad circumstances, but she gets through it by pretending that she's in a musical when things get bad. She sings and dances when most of us would cry. This movie alone made me want to become a screenwriter. The first time I saw it I thought, "I want to write movies that make people feel everything like that." Now, I'm more the comedy type and will probably never write a masterpiece like this. But whenever I get discouraged with my writing, "Dancer In the Dark" is at the top of a short list of movies I re-watch for inspiration. |
